Web site error rocks global oil markets

An error on the web site of TV station in Tulsa, Oklahoma, caused a spike in world oil prices today.

CBS affiliate KOTV reported that a lightning strike had caused a fire at an Oklahoma refinery — sparking a flurry of excitement among energy traders and boosting U.S. crude prices 40 cents, according to Reuters. The refining company announced the story was “completely wrong” and the station withdrew the story.

“All it takes is a screw-up on a Web site to move the market. It just goes to show how tense this market is,” said a Houston-based oil trader.

CNN to make Pipeline video free

CNN will redesign its internet offerings July 1, including making its CNN Pipeline video product free. The product was launched in late 2005 as a $25-a-year service providing four “streams” of video with footage of breaking news.

CNN, IBS partner

CNN and Internet Broadcasting have formed a partnership, in which they will link to each others’ content and work together on online ad platforms. This means CNN will link to local news stories from IBS member TV station sites and IBS sites will link to CNN content.

Knight News Challenge First-Year Winners Announced

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation today announced more than $10 million in grant money to fund innovative ideas for using digital news and information to build and bind community in specific geographic areas. Winners of the Knight News Challenge include The Media Lab and Comparative Media Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which will receive $5 million to create a Center for Future Civic Media to develop, test and study new forms of high-tech community news; and journalist/web developer Adrian Holovaty, creator of chicagocrime.org, who will receive $1.1 million to create a series of city-specific web sites devoted to public records and hyper-local information.
